Dabotap and Seokgatap Pagodas

Bulguksa contains two of Korea’s most revered pagodas - the three-story Seokgtap and the octagonal Dabotap. Each were made during the Silla Dynasty. Sadly, the Seokgtap was being restored, with a huge glass and corrugated metal structure enclosing it. The Dabotap, standing 10.3 meters tall, was built in the mid-8th century. It successfully and skillfully balances square, octagonal, and circle forms in one holistic design. Only one of the four stone lions on Dabotap remains, with the others lost during Japanese occupation. The ornate structure of Dabotap is reproduced on the South Korean 10 won coin.
